This graceful image of two juvenile birds courting in front of a nesting Albatross on Prion Island in the South Georgia Islands on the outskirt of the Antarctic circle was made as I was there documenting a story about climate change and the successful rat eradication program. It’s because of the consideration and effort put in to the rat eradication that South Georgia’s ground nesting birds have been saved from complete decimation.

The Wanderers, the largest flying bird with a wingspan of up to 3.5m have such large range on the wing out at sea, it has been hard to control and mitigate against the fishing vessels that they run into and compete with for food, that often accidentally trap them as ‘bycatch’ to their intended trade. There are some simple techniques that commercial fishing boats can adopt to minimise snaring the birds. Outside of South Georgian waters it can be hard to enforce a change of practice. Albatross are slow breeders, maturing slowly and taking time to raise juveniles. They mate for life, numbers of these incredible birds are tragically in decline.

This print is an open edition, printed, signed, stamped and personally checked over by me.

Your print will be sent in a protective tube or flat for smaller prints. Inline with my environmental policy (unless instructed otherwise), your print may be packaged in equally protective, repurposed packaging.
