This photo essay is an empirical exploration by Tamara Stubbs into the creation of an original design by British designer and maker Richard La Trobe-Bateman. It captures the evolution of an exciting, daring, and original footbridge ‘The Gap Bridge’ from conception through to construction at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Canada, tracing its timeline from an initial commission for the radical arts festival Burning Man to final standing object.
Conceived through decades of design and materials experience, this extraordinarily beautiful bridge embodies a philosophy of creating beautiful objects with minimal material and absolute honesty.
Text and images carefully lithograph-printed onto beautiful paper, then bound, printed by the multi-award winning printers Empress, alongside my brilliant book designer, Elle Grandison.
