Richard La Trobe Bateman in his Batcombe Studio 2017 - From the series The Gap Bridge
In 2017, interested in Richard La Trobe-Bateman’s work, I started photographing him in his studio as he started on a commission for a footbridge. This time it was to be erected in the Nevada desert for the radical arts festival ‘Burning-Man’. The festival is famous for the opportunity and challenge it offers artist-designers to work outside the constraints of the ‘everyday’. The challenge was to produce an extreme structure that would heighten the feelings of ‘crossing’. The task delighted Richard, who had long been considering designing such a structure: an edgy bridge, with the crosser experiencing sensations of drama and possible hazard when using it.
Richard’s approach attracted me because he is one of the last practising designers coming from a time of traditional art school training in the 1950s, and he was part of the revolution in those art schools. Classical skills transfer and development training was turned on its head and students had to figure it out for themselves, sometimes in bizarre experimental situations introduced by the teaching staff. Richard’s time as a student at Saint Martin’s was during a golden age for sculpture under the combined leadership of Anthony Caro and Frank Martin. Here he caught the end of the old Art School world and was part of an extraordinary break from tradition to revolution. This revolution is now evident in his work, work also stacked with craft expertise.
