Photography: Victor Vescovo invited me to be the expedition photographer for his mission to The Calypso Deep in the Mediterranean

Explorer and master of the deepest points on the planet, Victor’s February 2020 submersible dive was to the deepest point of the Mediterranean Sea in the Hellenic Trench. Alongside was his co-pilot and guest, HSH Prince Albert of Monaco on his first dive.

It was fun to be back on-board Pressure Drop, a vessel and its crew I know very well after filming the 5 Deeps expedition for Atlantic Productions / Discovery during 2018 & 2019. For the 5 Deeps Expedition we travelled to every ocean, diving to the deepest point, with the (Deep Submergence Vehicle), DSV ‘Limiting Factor’ an exciting prototype, at the time, custom made, ground breaking submersible. Currently the only sub commercially certified by the international maritime authority DNV-GL – for extensive, repeated dives to any depth.

This time, the mission was a little easier, though still at 5,109 metres deep, but just a hop away from the shore, with more predictable seas. We were lucky enough to have a full moon to put the landers into the sea by, in the warmth of the Grecian waters just off Kalamata, famous for its olives, and good weather for the dive the following morning.
