PHOTOGRAPHS: ENDURANCE COLLECTION & Earth Photo 2020: Shortlisted for the category ‘A Climate of Change’

During lockdown I have been busy getting together a fine art photographic collection. I have titled this collection Endurance Collection, as I took them in the place that Shackleton’s ship Endurance was recorded to have sunk after being crushed in the ice. Deep within the Weddell Sea gyre in Antarctica, the place that Shackleton and his men lived and survived, whist stranded on the ice, is about as remote as you can get, and normally totally inaccessible. A break in the sea ice, some bold navigation and ice-breaking, allowed us a very rare visit. The beauty of this place and the light is incredible, the lack of any form of man-made structure apart from the ship was a rare sight, there was no distraction from raw nature.

The collection has been selected to be in the Moorwood Art autumn exhibition. This year the exhibition, due to lockdown conditions, is online. This has its benefits as well as drawbacks, as it is always nice to see your work hanging on a gallery wall alongside other artists, and the buzz of art buyers. That said, potentially there is a larger audience online.

Another exhibition that has gone online is the Earth Photo 2020 competition that I made the shortlist on, it was due to open at the Royal Geographical Society early December for 3 months. Alongside an opening party for those whose work was selected, and the announcement of the overall category winners. Earth photo has an impressive line-up of judges so I was especially thankful to have been selected.

Not the best year to be having these goals achieved! That said, to have been lucky enough to have witnessed the wildlife in one of the worlds least accessible places, and to have felt their gaze, was incredible. It goes without saying we need to all, seriously, make the changes needed to protect our planet from further thoughtless destruction and pollution.
